10 Tips for Mastering the Job Interview

Every day, thousands of interviews happen across the world — and at Orbis, we see around 2,000 every few months alone. That’s thousands of conversations, questions, and “Tell me about yourself” moments. In a candidate-rich market, that’s a whole lot of competition.

And yet, despite the flood of talent, many candidates fall flat when it matters most — in the room (or on the screen) with the person who could shape the next step of their career.

You’d be amazed at how many CVs we see that are flawless on paper. Ivy League grads. AI certifications. Former "Employee of the Year." Coders with skill sets so niche they could probably teach the hiring manager a thing or two. But here’s the catch: all the credentials in the world don’t mean a thing if you can’t confidently represent yourself for 60 minutes.

We’re in an era where people don’t speak much anymore. We hide behind curated newsfeeds and typed-out updates. Presentations make us sweat. Personal branding has gone from speaking on stage to whispering behind algorithms. So when it comes time to advocate for yourself — live, out loud, and under pressure — even the brightest minds can struggle.

  1. Start with research. Know the company, the team, the product, the culture. Go beyond the job description and learn how the business actually operates.

  2. Practice talking about yourself in a way that feels natural. Not rehearsed, not robotic — just clear and confident. Get used to summarising your value without overselling it.

  3. Avoid buzzwords. Everyone’s a “strategic thinker” these days. Be specific. Tell stories. Show impact.

  4. Prepare questions that show you're thinking like an insider already. What are the team’s goals this quarter? Where does this role make the most commercial impact?

  5. Don’t panic if you don’t know something. How you handle a curveball says more than the answer itself.

  6. Get feedback. If you’re interviewing regularly, ask your recruiter or hiring contact what you could improve. Most people don’t bother, so you’ll stand out just by asking.

  7. Don’t treat the interviewer like a gatekeeper. Treat them like a future colleague. That mindset shift makes a huge difference in how you show up.

  8. Talk about your failures. Done right, they show resilience, self-awareness and growth.

  9. Remember that body language matters more than you think. Even on Zoom.

  10. And finally — back yourself. You’ve earned the seat at the table. Now speak like you belong there.
