Shaking It Up in Stockholm

Stockholm is one to watch. Thriving in the tech market, it’s been called the ‘Silicon Valley of Europe’. The density of startups here is hard to rival, and music streaming giant Spotify is still based in the heart of the town.

With a world-leading culture of work-life balance and well-being, this city is also full of heritage sites, has a friendly atmosphere, and is becoming one of the most exciting foodie destinations in Europe.

So let’s explore all you need to know about the ‘world’s biggest small town’.

What’s the city like?

It’s the second most visited city in the Nordic countries, and one of the cleanest metropolises in the world spread across canals clear enough to swim in.

Stockholm gets a hat trick of urban appeal, centuries of history, and natural beauty. According to Orbis consultant Ryan Brown “The locals love Sweden’s archipelago for outdoor activities and being at one with nature.”

The city is ever-changing due to exciting new neighbourhoods like this popping up to embrace the growing population. There’s somewhere for everyone and convenient links to all parts of town.

Average rent price?

The average rent for accommodation in Stockholm varies between 20,874 SEK a month in more expensive areas, and 15,942 SEK in others, as stated by Expatistan. That’s equivalent to about £1300 to £1700 GBP, or $1600 to $2150 in US dollars.

Stockholm ranked 72nd out of 209 countries in the Mercer Cost of Living survey, according to Expat Arrivals. It’s cheaper than Luxembourg and Brussels, but more expensive than Barcelona and Prague.

This said, both rent and certain living costs decrease sharply as you head out into the suburbs, where the standard of living is just as good, and new housing is becoming available all the time.

Weather (and the wardrobe)

You’re in for a mixed bag throughout the year in Stockholm, but the good news is each season is unique and beautiful in its own right.

Get ready for summer nights that barely get dark, with the midnight sun in June - and invest in some blackout curtains. The spectacular colours of autumn are followed by a cold and snowy winter, and in the spring locals like to get out into the first rays of the sun (albeit wrapped in blankets!)

Ryan also tells us that “In Sweden, there are two real extremes. In winter, it can easily reach -15 °C while in summer, it can climb to 25 °C+. Going to Sweden in summer is like visiting another country entirely. Don’t forget your sunglasses! You’re going to need them.”

That’s a top tip. With the abundance of crystal clear water all around, it’s bright - and we mean bright!

Culture and food

Each quarter of Stockholm is a character unto itself. From the laid-back and creative Södermalm and refined, elegant Östermalm to the busy and vibrant downtown Norrmalm and the charming Old Town to its south.

The city is renowned as innovative, forward-thinking and welcoming to everyone. It has the biggest Pride celebration in the Nordics, attracting tens of thousands of LGBTQIA+ visitors every year.

If you have an artistic bent, there’s no end to the thrills in Stockholm. Visit world-class museums and galleries, palaces, houses and sculpture gardens.

Art is literally everywhere. In fact, the city’s subway system is known as the ‘world's longest art gallery, its stations adorned with sculptures, mosaics and paintings.

But what about after hours? For nightlife, there are numerous up-and-coming, lively parts of the city with bars, clubs and events to frequent. Here are a few:

Icebar Stockholm - Well known for a reason, this is a unique drinking experience you shouldn’t miss.

Jazzpuben Stampen - A classical Jazz & Blues bar in the heart of Old Town. Set in what used to be both a church and Pawnshop, this one is lousy with history and character.

Tweed - Another entry for Old Town, Tweed is loved for its comfortable cosy setting, great atmosphere and craft cocktails.

Skål!

As far as food goes, you’re in for a smorgasbord of sustainable and delicious meals on every corner. Don’t forget to go traditional and experience Swedish meatballs served with gravy, boiled potatoes and lingonberry jam.

Here are some of our hot tips on where to eat in Stockholm:

Restaurant Prinsen - Chic, high-ceilinged, turn of the century and classic without pretension. Prinsen is a place to eat and socialise surrounded by art-filled walls. You’ll find the best meatballs here.

Restaurant AG - Hailed as the best steakhouse in Sweden. A reputation that speaks for itself.

Oaxen Krog and Slip -  Choose between fine dining and a toned-down brasserie at this nautical-themed bistro set within a restored yellow shipyard - We just can’t resist!

So, is Stockholm for you?

It offers beautiful surroundings, a friendly culture, nightlife spots with oodles of personality, and a foodie scene as sustainable as it is delicious. All coupled with abundant opportunities in the tech industry.

If that’s what you’re looking for, there’s nowhere better.
