The Power of Crypto Communities

The Power of Crypto Communities

Cryptocurrency projects are defined by the communities behind them. At the end of the day, it’s about people.

But what makes a good crypto community?

The same principles apply to any group that comes together with a goal. Shared ideology is essential to success and longevity.

Many crypto communities are on a mission to empower people and use coins to affect progress and change. We’ll check out a few examples below.

But first, let’s see how you can get involved.

Where are Crypto communities hanging out?

As Dailycoin highlights, ‘Accessible, timely information has proven to be one of the most sought-after assets in the crypto industry.’

That means you’ve got to get talking. Social media has been a haven for crypto enthusiasts to share, learn and empower one another.

Below, we mention a few mainstay hangouts of the crypto world, where you can join the conversation:

  • Reddit - According to chainbulletin, Reddit has become ‘the most common choice for community building in cryptocurrency’.

  • Slack - the ‘Cryptominded’ slack community is open to discussion about any currency, and includes channels such as #trading #mining #crowdsales and #events.

  • Meetup - A great option for in-person gatherings in your local area, there are countless Crypto meetup groups based all over the world focusing on specific coins and NFTs.

  • Discord - Providing space for in-depth conversations, Discord has a Crypto server for you whether you’re just here to learn or serious about investing. See Dailycoin’s roundup of ten servers for 2022 here.
Meet the Crypto Community heroes.

From revolutionising banking and empowering women and people of colour, to finding a way for tech innovation and the climate to exist in harmony, communities and initiatives like these are leveraging Cryptocurrencies to create real-world change.

Bitcoin Beach.

While there are differing perspectives on the ethical merit of this project (with factors too numerous to explore here), its objective is, fundamentally, to improve lives.

Bitcoin beach is  ‘creating a sustainable Bitcoin Economic ecosystem on the coast of El Salvador’. Here, having a bank account isn’t the norm, and local businesses aren’t able to accept credit cards due to requirements for merchant accounts.

The innovative nature of bitcoin offers the possibility to ‘bank the unbanked’, bringing power back to people, instead of institutions.

This is a project and a community experiment that aims to prove how cryptocurrencies can change the world for the better, and ensure that those most in need will benefit.

Black Bitcoin Billionaire.

Describing itself as ‘the Bitcoin voice of the people,’ this platform is all about uplifting communities. They discuss ‘Bitcoin, cryptocurrency, and generational wealth building.’

Founder Lamar Wilson has been educating about bitcoin globally since 2013, and believes that the freedom of Bitcoin can help in his mission to “arm the disenfranchised with education around Bitcoin and financial freedom”.

Black Women Blockchain Council.

Founded by Olayinka Odeniran after she attended a 2018 Bitcoin Conference where only three out of 88 speakers were women, this project ‘trains and promotes Black women interested in blockchain and fintech’ as stated by The Hustle.

In their mission to correct Diversity & Inclusion in blockchain and fintech, they focus on areas like tech funding and hiring gaps, the wealth gap and economic opportunity.

Change the Code, not the Climate.

Crypto has its issues, and chief among them for many is the climate impact of excessive energy use through mining.

Did you know that bitcoin uses more energy each year than all of Sweden, and this demand for energy could increase harmful fossil fuel usage?

This organisation is leveraging the power of a community that’s interested in both crypto and the climate, to raise awareness and promote a petition for their solution:

A simple change in code, transitioning away from the complex and fuel-guzzling process of ‘proof of work’, to reduce energy use by up to 99%.

Ultimately, in the right hands, Cryptocurrency can be not only a source of wealth but also a force for good, through the power of communities.
